What is Hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation is the darkening of an area of skin caused by increased quantity of melanin (the pigment responsible for producing colour in the body). The increased quantity of melanin may be caused by illness or injury, such as sun damage, or inflammation, or may be related to acne. Pregnancy can also cause a greater production of melanin reulting in melasma or mask of pregnancy.
Varicose veins are swollen and enlarged veins, usually blue or dark purple in colour, that can be seen through the skin and mostly occur in the legs. They may also be lumpy, bulging or twisted in appearance. Varicose veins are a common condition, affecting up to three in 10 adults. Women tend to be more affected than men.
Any vein in the body can become varicose, but they most commonly develop in the legs and feet, particularly in the calves. This is because standing and walking puts extra pressure on the veins in the lower body.
