Stretch Marks

What are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks are narrow streaks or lines that develop on the surface of the skin. They are usually red or purple to start with and will gradually fade to a silvery-white colour. Men and women can get stretch marks on several areas of their bodies, including the abdomen, thighs, hips, breasts, upper arms, and lower back.

When constantly stretched, the dermis can break down, leaving stretch marks behind as a form of scarring in the dermis, the elastic middle layer of skin that allows it to retain its shape. The dermis can be stretched during pregnancy, as a result of weight gain, or due to growth spurts during puberty.
